SCIENTIFIC PRODUCTION PROJECT: IMPROVING THE ECOLOGICAL STATUS OF SHORE WATERS AND PREVENTING THE SHORELINE FROM DESTRUCTION BY CREATING ARTIFICIAL BIORIFFS
A group of Bulgarian and Ukrainian scientists participated in an international scientific consortium, whose goal was to develop structures of artificial bioreefs for purifying coastal waters and preserving biodiversity and the coastline. They provided scientific support for the project, developed schemes for the installation of a bioreef in the Vromos Bay, Bourgas region. The Consortium included specialists from: Technical University of Varna, Helix Group Ltd., Institute of Oceanology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The reports on the analyses of the work of the bioreef have confirmed its properties for cleaning the Black Sea and for storm resistance. We propose the construction of such bioreefs not only in Ukraine, but also in Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Iran and Azerbaijan. Our scientists have slightly modified the design and underwater installation of bioreefs, but this does not affect the very concept of "BOIREEF - BIOFILTER" for the Caspian Sea.

Results
•Bioreef favors the emergence and increase of the significant biomass created by marine molluscs and accelerates self-cleaning processes.
•As a result, there is a clearly expressed tendency to reduce the concentrate of nitrogenous substances - ammonia and nitrite nitrogen.
•The bioreef design is storm-resistant and protects the sea shore edge from erosion.
Based on the empirical data obtained from the project, the bioriff structure was modernized for practical operation in the Caspian Sea. The added hydraulic structures are of a dual nature, they serve to strengthen the coastline and are also intended as spawning grounds for marine life.

This innovative biotechnological project is also being implemented with the help of cross-border programs of the European Union: "Black Sea Basin 2021-2027"; Danube 2021-2027. We have developed a number of different designs of "alive bioriths" for different natural and landscape characteristics of the Black, Mediterranean, Aegean, Azov and Caspian seas.
